Anti-Smoking Policy
RATIONALE
Smoking is a major cause of illness and early death, and affects non-smokers through passive smoking. The laws prohibiting smoking made under The Health Act 2006 require that enclosed or substantially enclosed public places and workplaces are smoke-free. In addition, since October 2007 it has been illegal to sell tobacco products to anyone under the age of 18. Accordingly the school recognises its duty to discourage smoking and to encourage a healthy lifestyle.
AIMS
1. To apply the law prohibiting smoking made under The Health Act 2006 by providing a no-smoking environment.
2. To make pupils aware of the health risks involved in smoking. To encourage pupils to cope with pressures on them to take up smoking. To enable pupils to make informed, responsible choices.
3. To support the national targets for reducing the proportion of smokers in all age groups.
IMPLEMENTATION
1. In line with National legislation the school and the Kingsham Campus are no-smoking areas.
2. Smoking is not permitted on school transport or in any other vehicle while being used for work purposes which is shared by other staff or pupils.
3. Smoking or the possession of smoking materials by pupils in school or while in school uniform is considered a serious offence. A pupil caught or suspected of smoking will be logged and subject to a ‘Smoking Report' regime for a week, administered by their PSM. Parents will be informed and her bags and pockets will be checked daily and a card signed to indicate that this has happened. She may also be subject to a random check (at any time) and offered a session with the School Nurse. Any further transgression will result in one day's exclusion from school, with a parental reintegration interview, time in the Learning Support room and Headteacher's Report.
4. The National Curriculum Science programme teaches pupils about the harmful effects of tobacco and its effects on bodily functions, particularly breathing.
5. The CPHSE programme provides pupils with the facts and skills to cope with pressures on them to take up smoking.
6. No form of sponsorship from tobacco companies will be sought.
7. An A5 size sign is posted prominently at each entrance to the school and is maintained in good condition. The sign displays the prohibition of smoking symbol and contains the words "No smoking - It is against the law to smoke in these premises".
8. Staff wishing to give up smoking can obtain advice and assistance from Right Corecare on 0800 1116 387.
